There are many apps that will teach you how to play the piano on the market today, with each app claiming to have its specialty and focus.

Skoove claims to be the best piano app for beginners while focusing on music theory and simple pieces.

Let’s take a look at what Skoove is – its learning methods, concepts, special features, and whether or not it’s worth it.

How Does Skoove Work?

To cater to a more international demographic, Skoove has six languages to choose from when you get started. It also uses a pleasant and straightforward interface. The setup is relatively easy, and Skoove walks the student through it carefully.

Even on the free trial, you only need to set your input to begin Skoove’s online piano lessons.

Skoove specializes in teaching music theory, sight-reading, and listening, which is done by making you learn simple concepts little by little and step by step.

It is especially handy for complete beginners as Skoove can help you get into melodies, rhythms, and synchronize what you hear and see by lighting up the sheet music and keyboard interface together. The complexity of each exercise is gradual, too, as hands are exercised separately before making the student play with two hands at once.

The way that Skoove assesses the student is also crucial. Skoove is programmed to return real-time feedback through your piano input. In each lesson, it focuses on the different aspects and gives you feedback based on that.

Just from the assessment, curriculum, and concepts presented, you can see that Skoove goes back to the basics, and does it really well.

Skoove also understands that with any other skill, repetition is vital to retaining what you’ve learned and turning it into muscle memory. Even if you’ve received good feedback on a stage or lesson, Skoove still gives you the option to keep repeating it until you’re satisfied.

Skoove Curriculum

Skoove’s full curriculum is composed of 19 different courses. Since each course focuses on a different aspect of piano playing, piano players of any level can benefit from them.

Here are the different sections you will find among the courses:

Piano Beginner – This section has three levels: 1, 2, and 3. The most basic level, Piano Beginner 1, is built on rhythm, notation, and correct posture when playing. Children and beginners should start here.

Once these concepts are understood, Piano Beginner 2 starts the student on playing with the left and right hand together. Piano Beginner 3 teaches intervals to benefit better playing with both hands.

After this section, the student should be able to play simple yet well-known pieces.

Piano Songs Beginner – This section solely focuses on learning songs. There are 89 songs available for the student to peruse through. One trendy choice is the Titanic theme song, “My Heart Will Go On.”

Beginner Theory – Although Piano Beginner 1 teaches musical notation, Beginner Theory starts a deeper understanding of rhythm, notes, and the musical staff. Although it’s not essential to learning the piano, I highly recommend those looking to learn piano to take this section.

Piano Intermediate – Divided into three levels, this section tackles more key concepts such as different key signatures, chord variants and inversions, different time signatures, and dynamics.

You will also master minor scales and transpositions. The Piano Intermediate levels equip you to learn the songs available in Piano Songs Intermediate.

Piano Songs Intermediate – With a collection of 73 songs, students can now learn more complicated pieces like the famous “Fur Elise.”

Chords and Scales – More than perfecting these musical components, Skoove helps you learn their importance and usage in music, such as through riffs and progressions.

Pop Piano – This section equips students to learn pop songs on the piano. It focuses more on chord progressions, inversions, and a bit on improvisation too.

Piano Songs Advanced – This collection of songs includes more recent pop songs. Among them are some of Adele’s greatest hits.

Blues and Boogie Woogie Piano – Aside from pop and classical, Skoove introduces another genre, which is the Blues. Learning new styles is always beneficial for piano students.

Keyboard for Producers – I’ve hardly been able to find a similar course on other piano apps, but this section helps students learn how to produce music digitally.

You can see there is a wide range of concepts that Skoove teaches. It may seem overwhelming, but these courses and sections are split into 300 digestible lessons, with new lessons being added to each app update.

Is Skoove Worth It?

Now that we’ve looked at the features that Skoove has to offer. Let’s look at the pros and cons this online piano course has to offer.

Pros

Skoove is made for beginners. It has a great selection of lessons that focus on mastering beginner concepts. The lessons are both theoretical and practical. They help the student practice their playing while letting them understand how the music works, and they use both auditory and visual cues to enforce what the student is playing.

Skoove also has an adequate music library to go with its lessons. Although it’s not as expansive as other piano apps, it does its job in reinforcing what the student has learned during the lessons.

Skoove’s curriculum and assessment methods are adequate in teaching piano from beginner to intermediate to even more advanced levels. With the ability to repeat lessons as often as you want, you can learn at your own pace.

Its interface is smooth, neat, and well-designed, so new students can intuitively navigate the platform. It also uses regular music input. Like most other learn piano apps, it requires a digital keyboard and USB-MIDI cable, or at least a microphone for acoustic input.

It also has a good selection of payment plans and isn’t overly expensive for what it offers. And it favors a more comprehensive demographic thanks to the six languages available.

Cons

When it comes to the cons, it’s in the smaller things that make Skoove a bit inconvenient to use. For example, it only shows sheet music a little at a time and doesn’t offer an option to show the full sheet. There is also no way to customize the interface to your personal preferences, however as previously said, they are merely minor inconveniences.

Hardware and Software Requirements

Because Skoove uses digital media and interfaces, it’s essential to know what equipment or devices you’ll need to run it smoothly.

One convenient thing about Skoove is that, on the computer, it’s an in-browser app. Instead of downloading it through the website, you need to make an account on the Skoove website. Once you’ve logged in, you can select your courses tab to look at the lessons available.

However, for Apple devices such as iPads or iPhones, Skoove has to be downloaded through the app store, and the app is all you need to find your courses. Android devices can also download the Skoove app.

The next most crucial thing that Skoove needs is input. These could come in the form of a digital keyboard or a piano with MIDI input, or even just your computer keyboard.

However, if you’re seriously committed to learning to play the piano, we think the best input is an 88-key weighted keyboard. It gives you the complete range and as close a feel as possible to an acoustic piano.

Thankfully, if an acoustic piano is what you have, Skoove also has its acoustic mode. Take note that the device you are using Skoove on, whether your computer or Apple device, has to have a working microphone and speakers/audio output. Skoove will be listening to your piano playing and giving feedback through these.

Make sure that you have a stable, fast internet for a smooth Skoove experience, especially if you want to take full advantage of all its features.

Subscription Plans

Like most other piano learning apps, Skoove has a free trial option that lets you try out the platform before you purchase it. However, while most apps use the 30-day free trial scheme, Skoove enables you to use it for free for an unlimited amount of time – but only with limited features.

The free and the paid versions are divided into Skoove Basic (free) and Skoove Premium (paid). Signing up to the website gives you Skoove Basic.

For Skoove Premium, you have to choose among the following payment plans:

Pay every 1 month – $19.99 for 1 month

Pay every 3 months – $39.99 for 3 months

Pay every 12 months – $119.99 for 12 months

Along with full access to all the lessons, you also get access to the new lesson releases which come out monthly. Skoove also has on-hand piano instructors that can help you through their platform.

Skoove Review – Final Thoughts

After checking out the curriculum, interface, features, and prices, I believe it sits among the best online piano lessons, especially for beginners.

However, even for non-beginners, the diverse and expansive curriculum is suitable for all other levels. Its curriculum is also organized and divided well so that it makes sense and is easy for the learner to absorb.

New piano students will learn a lot from Skoove. It covers the very basics, even including posture and single-hand playing, and goes all the way to learning different genres like classical, pop, and blues. It also goes the extra mile for teaching theory and musical production.

As a piano-learning software should, Skoove does a great job of combining auditory and visual cues to incorporate musical practice and understanding into the student’s learning foundations. It goes through note-playing, sight-reading, music theory, and even a bit of improvisation.

Even for advanced players, these concepts are great to review and brush up on. Another audio-visual aspect is Skoove’s real-time feedback feature. It helps for quick learning and mastery of a topic by letting the student know right away what they need to improve on.

With consistent, well-paced usage, piano beginners will make speedy and impressive progress with Skoove.
