Key takeaways

  • BIMM University in London launched AI_Lab for “Exploring the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Creative Industries.”
  • It aims to explore the growing link between AI and human creativity.
  • Warren Barkley, the leader of Google Cloud AI, will join as a visiting professor on the course.

BIMM’s AI_Labs course centers on AI’s role in the creative industries, aiming to encourage safe, ethical use of the technology while mitigating the risks.

The lab will also lead research on how to build mutually beneficial collaboration between the AI and creative industries.

Students enrolling in the AI-Labs course will explore AI in the music, film, TV, and media industries, investigating AI-driven art and the interaction between AI and human creativity.

2023 has witnessed numerous examples of AI blurring the lines between machine and human creativity, including AI-generated covers and mashups like Johnny Cash covering Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ or Frank Sinatra singing Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets.’

David Jones-Owen, chief executive and vice-chancellor of BIMM University, described of the program, “Our mission is clear, we want to comprehensively understand the profound impact AI is having on the creative industries and, by extension, our academic institution.”

He continued, “It is imperative that our students and lecturers are well-prepared for the AI-driven future and that our university’s operational strategies are optimized to embrace this transformative wave. On a wider scale, for the UK to stay at the forefront of the creative industries globally, our future artists and industry professionals need to be properly equipped.”

AI’s rising role in the creative industries

Anxiety among creatives has increased with the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E 3, with audio-centric models gaining pace, too, including Google’s Lyria. There have been lawsuits, high-profile conversations at AI tech summits, and roundtable discussions within governments.

The Stability AI head of audio recently resigned due to moral qualms about freely using copyrighted work as AI training data, and advocate groups representing creatives are warning of AI’s impacts on the sector

It’s a balancing act, as AI will enable new generations of art and music.

BIMM’s course addresses AI’s opportunities and challenges in the music industry, aiming to “foster collaboration between human artists and AI systems, expanding the possibilities for artistic creation and pushing the boundaries of what is considered possible in the creative field.”

Warren Barkley, the leader of Google Cloud AI, will join as a visiting professor on the course.

He shared his perspective, saying, “The synergy between AI and the creative industries is undeniable. From enhancing music composition to revolutionizing visual arts, the application of machine learning to creative industries opens a new world for artists of all types. I am honored to be part of BIMM University’s visionary approach in preparing the next generation of creatives to harness the power of AI while preserving the authenticity of their art.”

One of the key themes of AI_Labs is ethical research. The program encourages a thoughtful approach to AI’s use in the arts, including the technology’s evolving moral responsibilities and implications.

However, the overarching focus of the course is squarely on using AI for positive end rather than rejecting its role in the arts. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, as they say.

As AI’s role in the creative industries strengthens, this course might be the forerunner for other similar initiatives.
